PENNY'S FROM HEAVEN

Whenever America has fought a war, the soldiers and their families have always paid the greatest sacrifice. Some wounds are temporary and some will last a lifetime. But the most horrific wound of all is to be forgotten by the people for whose freedom American soldiers have fought. This book is dedicated to America’s wounded warriors, with the hope that they now know they will never be forgotten.Copies of Pockets of Peace are being sent to wounded warriors in Iraq, Afghanistan and United States Military Hospitals.

PENNY'S FROM HEAVEN needs more books. They have depleted their supply, and your contribution will allow them to print another batch of books that will go directly to soldiers. Basically ONE dollar a copy. We are anticipating a reprint as soon as possible. But funding just isn’t there. Please, help us help our soldiers.

This book is making a difference – far greater than anticipated! Please help us help the soldiers by contributing today.

Join us at our 27th restaurant opening as we support
PENNY'S FROM HEAVEN
along with their families and the community for an evening of
food, family and fun!

THE CLOCK SAYS 7AM

For awhile now I have been hearing the FREEB!RDS crew arrives super early to make everything from scratch. Scratch, this is a restaurant on speed (at least it is during lunch on any given day) moving a mile a minute. How do they keep it fresh? No, seriously.

Well let's just say that on my recent visit to Shepherd Plaza in Houston, I got a sneak peak behind the scenes. Yep, at 7am. Not only was the rice cooking but the chips were being fried, dipped and swirled (all homemade mind you) and the Roasted Tomatillo dressing was being whipped up for the days use. Man, was I impressed! I've never seen a place like this with such a dedicated crew. Who knew it took so much hard work, dedication and committed bunch of folks to make FREEB!RDS what it is today. Again, super impressed. I have such a better appreciation of what I'm eatingh......I mean all those chips will taste that much better as I wolf them down with my all-time favortire queso. Yum!

Keep up the great work you guys.....I'm thinking this is way too cool to be "not normal!"

HOW DO YOU FEEL TODAY?

Last night the UT Rugby team decided to have a contest after practice. Well, it wasn't any 'ole practice. Yep, a Super Monster eating contest. About 15 members of the team participated and the rest cheered them on. The winner was Matt Gabriel who finished his in 11min, 30seconds. Stephen Mahoney got what he called the Awesome-st Super-Monster. Not 2 but 3 Monster tortillas. It took 2 rollers to roll and you wouldn't believe it but he almost finished it.

Nice work guys. Feel free to come by after practice any time.

BEANS, BEANS, GOOD FOR YOUR HEART

I bet you didn't know this but we make our beans fresh, everyday at FREEB!RDS. Yep, every morning one of crew members is in charge of sorting, rinsing, boiling and stirring the beans you eat. To the right, we stir, and stir, and stir. We're stirring these things up until the time our doors open for lunch, just in time to serve you the freshest ingredients. We woudln't think about giving you anything else; I know I wouldn't want some processed "bean-like" substance. Anyway, wanted to give a shout out today to the crew who's stirring things up!

Another little tid-bit
Pinto Beans are the most widely produced bean in the United States and is one of the most popular in the Americas. It also contains the most fiber of all beans. Characteristically known by their medium size oval shape, with speckled reddish brown over a pale pink base and solid texture and flavor. CDC.gov - 5 a Day

PROOF IS IN THE......COOKIE CAKE

One of our guests (who is now a Fanatic) brought this cookie cake for the crew in The Woodlands. A couple days ago, a female guest lost a diamond ring in our restaurant. It was a family heirloom and she wasn't even sure she had lost it here. We looked initially and did not find it. At closing time as they were moving everything to sweep and mop, there it was! She was overjoyed when we called her to tell her the good news, and this is what she did for us.

This is just a small testament to the caliber of people working here at the Woodlands FREEB!RDS.

CRAVINGS THAT DON'T GO AWAY

Below is a letter we recently received from a loyal FANATIC, and we couldn't not share it with you all. Talk about inspirational. If you have a story to share, certainly send it our way. We'd love to Share the Love! (start at the bottom)

Chris,

What's good, man? PEACE and LOVE from your fav BURRITO joint! Mucho thanks for taking the time to share your FREEB!RDS story with me. I passed it along to some of my FREEB!RDS family and everyone was crazy inspired. So much so, that we would love to post it on our blog if you'd be cool with it. If you have any hesitation whatsoever please feel free to decline the request. Either way, thanks again for your FREEB!RDS FANATICISM.

Your partner in BURRITO rolling,

Dave

On July 18, 2009, Chris wrote:

Hey there!

How's it going? My name is Christian. I talked to you on Tuesday the 14th at the Freebird's in The Woodlands, well actually my mom kinda gave you my story but either way. So, I'm not really sure how much of the story you need, so I'll just send you the basic idea and you just get back to me with anything that's missing.

Ok, so the basic story as told by yours truly:

It was the summer of '02. I had spend the entire semester with my girlfriend in College Station, TX and became completely addicted to Monsters on cayenne with rice, refried beans, steak, jalapenos, and a splash of sour cream! We spend the summer in The Woodlands, TX and used every party opportunity in College Station to get Freebirds.

One day before moving back to College Station for the Fall Semester I broke my neck which left me paralyzed from my chest on down. After two weeks of ICU, feeding tubes, and ice chips I was moved to TIRR, a rehab hospital in the Medical Center.

I was finally allowed to eat 'food', but between the funny taste the tubes left in my mouth and the hospital cuisine, it wasn't long until I demanded a Monster! The Freebirds on Kirby was just a quick shot down the road, so I gave strict directions for my perfect Monster and sent my mom on her merry way! Well, it wasn't actually that easy. First I had a heated argument with the nurse in charge about habanero sauce, jalapenos, and cayenne tortillas. I angrily agreed to toning it down to mild...at that point I didn't care, all I wanted was my Monster!

My mom was gone for what seemed like an eternity, but I eventually heard her outside the room door talking to the nurse. What was she thinking wasting even a second out there? She just doesn't know! Well at this point it should be mentioned that having minimal motoric skills and Monsters don't necessarily mix well! I watched her unwrap the Monster and place it between my hands. The first attempt to get a bite ended with the Monster going straight for my eye (no pun intended!). After propping up some pillows and readjusting the burrito between my hands I finally got to have my bite! To describe the goodness should be not necessary, since those who've had it just know, and those who haven't had it, well, they will never understand it!

Thank you and have a good one, bud!

Christian

Burning Man? on a cruise to Alaska with your family? Wherever it may be, take a photo of you and your shirt in action. Post it. Share it. We want to know where The Bird has traveled.

Feel to post on our Facebook page as well.

THE DOORS ARE OPEN

Folks came in droves, Fanatics set up tents and waited to be the first 25 in line....the word spread from afar that The Woodlands was opening. As you can see from one of our loyal Fanatics, some are quite creative. Just wait, we'll have to hold a contest to see who can outdo the next. Until then, it's time for lunch....enjoy a burrito your way. That is a SUPER MONSTER by the way, with steak.

LESS THAN 24 HOURS

...and The Woodlands doors will be opening. There are currently 30 fanatics in line waiting to get their years' worth of FREE BURRITOS. Per the el jefe on duty, as of last night they tucked in the campers for a nice evening of waiting....not to worry - they have fans, 20" tv's, X-boxes and plenty of shelter with their tents.

"We were at 25 by 6pm at which time we passed around a fax order and placed an OTF for them from our Cutten Road location. We couldn't forget to bring them burritos to enjoy. The best story was the mom who got in line a 3pm for her son who was driving in from College Station to be sure he was in the running for the top 25. There will be many more stories to share as the clock ticks." Less than 24 hours to go...

The Woodlands FREEB!RDS is almost finished. Here is an updated look at the site from one of our loyal Fanatics, Brad. Thanks for letting us know you're out there keepin' an eye on things.

MARTIN PILLER IS NO AMATEUR

....in the morning news, Martin Piller is well on his way...

"His playing schedule did not come up, but his hankering for FREEB!RD'S World Burrito will take him back to Texas.

His favorite is the monster — the super monster is as big as your arm and just too much — with sirloin steak. A commercial in waiting, he knows the company started in California and then targeted College Station, including a place right across from the A&M campus.

"It is one of the most glorious places on earth," he said. "You can walk in and feel good about life."

ON THE STREETS

Here are some pics from our event over the weekend. Pat and his team volunteered as gate attendants at the Texas Folklife Festival, which benefits the UT Institute of Texan Cultures scholarships programs and also benefits various heritage, ethnic and cultural organizations in the area. We all braved the 100 degree heat and had a great time greeting and interacting with the guests, and even got a chance to tell the FREEB!RDS Story to curious guests. We also got a few “gig ems,” “hook 'em Horns” and even a “Hell Yeah- FREEB!RDS” in response to our t-shirts we wore. Good times were had by all; now looking for that next great World Works event.

Local artists find advice, friendship through Lubbock Sketch Club

By: Sarah Reiman/Staff Writer: posted: 4/27/09

The Lubbock Sketch Club meets every Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. to bring together a variety of artists to share and learn from each other.

Artists of every age and experience level meet at Freebird's near Slide Road and Loop 289, said Will Terrell, a Lubbock artist who create the club.

As many as 70 local artists have attended the weekly meeting, he said, but about 40 to 50 artists usually attend.

Sarah Vaughn, a freshman studio art major from Lubbock, said the Sketch Club has enabled her to feature multiple pieces of abstract art during First Friday Art Trail in the Depot District and has given her direction in publishing the graphic novel she is creating.

"It is nice to associate with other artists," Vaughn said.

Vaughn received treatment through horse therapy after being declared disabled for a period of time during her life.

Because of her healing experiences with horses, she now draws abstract versions of horses for the art shows she participates in.

Vaughn said she has been coming to Sketch Club meetings for a year a half and the members of the group have offered her advice and encouraged her artwork.

Marc Watson, an alumnus from Lubbock who will return to Tech in the fall to earn a fine arts master's degree, said the Lubbock Sketch Club has provided "an enjoyable environment" for him where connections with famous artists can be made.

He said he brings his 10-year-old brother to the weekly meetings, where artists ages 6 to 80 interact with each other.

Watson, who has created murals for Covenant Medical Center, encourages students interested in comics, art or graphics to come and enjoy Saturday meetings and not be afraid to bring examples of their work to share.

Also, the group offers opportunities to participate in the Lubbock Arts Festival, Comic Expos, classes, workshops and booths at craft fairs.

Terrell said the Lubbock Comic Book Expo will be hosted Friday through Sunday by Lubbock Sketch Club and Star Comics during the Lubbock Arts Festival at the Civic Center.

Terrell said the comics will be given out at the festival as part of National Free Comic Book Day, which takes place the first Saturday in May.

"This is huge for a comic book event in West Texas," he said.

Ariel Walden, a junior broadcast journalism major from Lubbock, said many of the friendships she has today have been gained through the Lubbock Sketch Club.

The club offers support from artists with similar interests and "talent with different styles," she said. Those who attend the meetings are friendly and give input on work.

She said people who "love art should draw a little every single day."

Terrell said he advises those interested in becoming better artists to find teachers and practice. He said the best way of learning is to "imitate things you see and ask questions."

"Most people think you have to be born talented to do work of any kind, especially with comic books," he said, "but I don't believe that's true at all. I think that it's like reading or writing or math. If society nourished it and encouraged it on a regular basis, everybody could draw and reach a certain level."

The Sketch Club caters to artists at whatever skill level they are at, he said, and if the artists enjoy drawing and are passionate about it, then they have the potential of getting to the skill level they desire.

"The Sketch Club is a way of challenging each other," Terrell said.

SAWYER HEIGHTS: NOW OPEN

Friday, March 27, 2009

WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR MUSTER?

As you know, April 21 is a big day around here.

Muster is a time to look at the past, present and future.....not only to reflect and to celebrate the lives that connect us to one another. A gesture so simple in nature yet so lasting in spirit, Muster is the lasting impression every Aggie leaves with us; it reminds us of the greatness that lies within these walls, of the loyalty we possess, of the connection that binds us, and of the idea that every Aggie has a place of importance - whether they are present in flesh or spirit.

With that, FREEB!RDS is proud to participate by honoring fellow fanatic, Jennifer Lynn Drost (1977-2008). Here's how it works: On April 21, purchase a printed logo for just $1 in one of eight locations in the College Station and Dallas areas. We'll proudly display it in on our walls showing your support. In turn, we're donating that money to the Jennifer Lynn Drost Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund that has been set up. This is just one way that FREEB!RDS WORLD WORKS is giving back to our community.

The endowment is through The Association of Former Students at Texas A & M, and donations are tax deductible. All donations should be made payable to the "Jennifer Lynn Drost Endowment Memorial Scholarship Fund" and mailed to:

Texas Round Up 10K and Family Mile

April 5th in Austin

FREEB!RDS loves the healthy initiative Texas Round Up started by Governor Perry back in 2004 and wanted to get involved. We know our fanatics have been exercising and working hard all year and the big race is coming up soon. The Texas Round-Up 10K, 5K and Family Mile Race is held in Austin annually on the last Saturday in April. We will be there to help feed some of the runners and volunteers while we throw out some “high fives” to all who join us from around the state. Our food is healthy, fresh and made from scratch on a daily basis so we are a natural fit! Be sure to come say hi to Julie, our catering manager.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN...

The city of Houston has just been turned upside down. As most of you know, the Houston Rodeo has come to town and is here to stay from March 3-22 and we're part of the show. With arts & crafts, A-Lister musical performances, horse and livestock shows, and much, much more, this is one show that should not be missed.

With that, FREEB!RDs has prime real estate on restaurant row, ready to roll you your favorite Monster or to Grab 'N Go on the fly. We'll be from open to close for the next few weeks, so be sure and stop by on your way in or out of the big show.

Peace. Love. Burritos.

LARGER THAN LIFE

The man behind "The Bird."

Ever wonder who that amazing artist is behind the great FREEB!RDs murals, hanging guitars, Libby waving her burritos or hidden VW buses that greet you around the bend? Well I had the great opportunity to meet long time artist, Lynn Wilkerson, during the final days of painting the soon-to-open Bunker Hill location. Kind, smart and a soulful way about him, Lynn clearly knows what he's doing. Armed with paints, scaffolding and a team of apprentice painters, he has ideas that come to life in each new location. If anyone, he can tell you that "it's been a long strange trip!"

YOU'RE SPEAKING, AND WE'RE LISTENING

Good evening folks,

Please don't delete this just yet.

I just wanted to take a moment to pass along some information that I've come to realize in the past few weeks. I'm a Former Student of Texas A&M in College Station, TX. I was curious to find Freebird's land there in the early 90's..and have NOT LET GO. I legged, pleaded and prayed, than when I moved back to Houston, the Freebird Gods would smile upon us and bless us with a Freebird's less than 90 miles away. They did and made the Shepherd/Greenbriar location.

They then shown generosity and smiled again, by giving us the one in NW Houston, on FM1960. Now, I suppose I can say that I'm being Greedy, and ask for another one to be put in the Woodlands, in north Houston...but I'm not.. I'm just one of HUNDREDS of Fanatics, not Fans, FANATICS.

How did I get your email addresses? Simple. I'm on Facebook, a social networking circle, and am a "FAN OF FREEBIRDS", a group simply showing interest in Freebird's. Put it this way, most of the posts are what we actually ORDER. Take mine for example:

(in order of assembly)

  • Monster Cayenne
  • Rice and Cheese(mixed)
  • Black Beans
  • Steak
  • Roasted Garlic
  • tablespoon of DEATH SAUCE
  • 4-5 dashes of Lime Juice
  • Pico de gallo
  • sour cream
  • lettuce

Always.... period.

the only thing I change is MAYBE the size. Anything else is not open for discussion. Yes, you'd be amazed how many of "us" are out there. I found that Tavistock took over Freebirds' operations from a former employee, when I asked about one of their older shirts that is out of production, and he pointed me to your website...Did some quick searching, and found both of you. Now, why the heck am I writing?? Here's why:

DON'T SCREW FREEBIRDS UP

Seriously, the way things are, are the way the NEED to Be... You can ADD stuff, and make new locations... but DO NOT MESS WITH THE OPERATION in the FRONT of the place...from the Statue of Liberty's on the Hog, to our precious tin-foil art, to the funky XM music piping through the speakers and one of the most important things. The way the people are behind the counter. They're students, they're eccentric, they have holes the size of dimes in their ears! But damn, do they know how to fold my burrito? They make sure it's tight, and well wrapped.

You know what? That's the BEST thing about the place, and that's why I have about 5-6 different Freebirds' shirts. Did you know you need 10 regulars on your Freebirds' card for a Free t-shirt?

May I make a suggestion? okay, Two..

One, Go hit a Freebird's... and get a BURRITO. No nachos, quesadillas, or ANYTHING else. Get a burrito - your way, and get a drink, and a bunch of napkins.

Then, try and argue if ANYTHING should be changed.

Second look on Facebook for Freebirds, and watch what WE are saying. We're saying a LOT more than what gets filled out on your website or comment cards in the places. That's about all the market research you would ever need.

Just please, don't mess up my baby. You have taken good care of it so far...Wishing you the best of luck in 2009!

-Brad Shore, Houston, TX

p.s. The Death Sauce is not as hot as the Habanero, but it's much tastier...just use sparingly.
