When words like fanatics, die-hards, mega fans, adventurers, pioneers, and awesome come to mind, we at FREEBIRDS World Burrito think about our "First 25." They are the early birds that get the worm, the men and women whose dedication to freshness and free burritos go beyond the comforts of home. They are the "First 25" and they are a group to be reckoned with.

You will notice this motley crew camping out in front of restaurants that are poised to open within days. You may be driving by an upcoming location and notice a sign that says OPENING SOON but then get confused by the group of good-timers hanging out with guitars, sleeping bags, and card games. "Who are these folks and what are they doing?" you might ask. These are our "First 25" and their mission is to withstand the elements and physical challenges they may endure to become one of the first 25 people to walk through the doors of a new restaurant on grand opening day. Their prize? Free burritos for a whole year (one burrito per week). That my friends, is dedication that deserves to be commended and we salute our amigos for their commitment to fresh food, community outreach, and rock & roll. You are forever ingrained in our hall of fame!

As FREEBIRDS World Burrito continues our tour across Texas and the West Coast we thank our past groups of "First 25ers" and give loud shout outs to the new people we will meet on this journey. Freebirds, known for its bulging burritos (the Super Monster weighs in at 7 pounds), nachos, and salads -- all custom made from a row of over 40 ingredients -- is expanding to USC, and 16 locations throughout California. A staple for UC Santa Barbara students for over 20 years, as well as Texans for nearly the same, Freebirds will open across the street from the USC campus on Thursday, January 13, 2011. Each location has a "roller," who helps you make difficult decisions such as choice of burrito size, and fillings of grass-fed beef, hormone-free chicken, pork carnitas, crispy fish, veggies and hot peppers.

Its first location in Isla Vista was opened by two Santa Barbara locals, who later sold the brand to Tavistock Restaurants. Since the sale, the Mexican chain, which changed its name to Freebirds World Burrito, opened 44 restaurants in Texas, and hopes to do the same on the West Coast.

Unlike its 24-hour location in Isla Vista, the 2559 square foot USC space will be open Monday through Wednesday, 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Thursday and Friday 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.; Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.; and Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. On opening day, January 13, 2011, Freebirds will partner with two L.A. charities, The Art of Elysium and Union Rescue Mission. Its newest location -- with a blue, multi-colored Volkswagen van, driven in from Texas and parked out front -- hopes to attract USC students, Angelenos, and a caravan of UCSB alumni.

WE'RE DOING OUR PART

The feeling of today resonates as we share our stories with those in need during this time of year. As part of our ongoing World Works efforts, our Freebird's Family has done it again by adopting families around Texas and Oklahoma. Whether it was partnering with military families, those who need food, those who are experiencing life transitions, giving gifts to children who have nothing to unwrap on Christmas morning, we have done a little part by bringing the community into our Freebird's Family.

This year’s Adopt A Family Program was a very moving experience for everyone involved. Each restaurant poured their hearts out into these efforts and it resulted in 41 military families sharing a holiday they will never forget. Below is an email that was received from an appreciative soldier after his experience at our Stone Ridge restaurant location:

“We cannot thank you enough for the wonderful night you gave our family! You are a truly inspirational company with fantastic employees! I serve my country not for recognition but because I want to, but people such as Steve and Matt and there crew make being a Soldier, father, husband and a man that much more worth being and doing! 41 FREEBIRDS COLLECTING GIFTS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

FREEBIRDS World Burrito has launched its collection drive for Operation Homefront, supporting military families and their Adopt A Family program. Throughout the upcoming holidays FREEBIRDS will designate one military family in need for each of their 41 locations throughout Texas.

FREEBIRDS and its charitable arm, FREEBIRDS World Works, has a mission to help inspire staff and guests to give back to the community.

"Every FREEBIRDS restaurant will collect gifts for military families such as gift cards to grocery stores in the amounts of $10, $20, $30 for military families to buy perishable foods for the holidays, and toys in the $5 to $20 range for all ages, especially the age group of tweens and teens," said Annette Beavers, director of FREEBIRDS World Works.

FREEBIRDS World Burrito has been involved in each of their local communities since its first location opened at College Station, Texas, 20 years ago. Each of the 41 locations is partnered with two local non-profit organizations and provides volunteer support & awareness events to over seventy non-profit partners across Texas and Oklahoma.

We're just outside the Grand Canyon into Arizona. We were able to capture some really cool photo near the Petrified Forest (which is super coll by the way) and we've gotten some great shots of the small towns along the way. We battled a storm last night that left Libby a little frost-bite. It dipped down to 22 degrees (brrrrr.....) on the last leg of the day, from NM to AZ. Who would've thought it would start snowing already? We slowed our pace and made it safe and sound to Eagar, AZ. Be sure to check out our Twitter page as well to see pics and more posts. Houston has a plethora of burrito chains but that hasn't stopped the growth of new locations opening every month. This week, Houston welcomes another Freebirds World Burrito, this time in Northwest Houston. The new location is located in the Northwest Crossing Shopping Center and will officially open Friday, June 3rd.

Like other Freebirds World Burrito locations in the past, there will be events leading up to Friday's opening. Tuesday, the first 250 people at 11 a.m. and again at 5 p.m. could donate $1 to The Sunshine Kids. In return for doing a good deed, guests received their choice of a burrito, nachos, burrito bowl, quesadilla, or salad plus a fountain drink (around a $7-$8 value). If you missed yesterday's promotion, not to worry, it's being offered again today (Wednesday, June 2).

It was a sellout at Houston Zoo Thursday night when 250 eager supporters, members of the young professionals group Flock, poured through the gates for an evening of animal encounters, light bites and DJ spins.

Official greeters were a North American porcupine, who could be coaxed into waving if offered the right treat, and a majestic bald eagle. It was a rare and wondrous opportunity to see one of the grand birds up-close-and-personal.

Katherine Chambers, Flock's conservation committee chair, officially welcomed guests and spoke briefly on the Zoo's numerous conservation programs. The education component taken care of, Flock-sters moved on to the jaguar exhibition for a special feeding — "bone-in" meat. Yum.

Just like the bone-in ribeye at Tony's. Not.

In any case, the crowd loved watching the sleek cats feed and romp in their new exhibit space.

Sipping brewskies from Saint Arnold Brewing Co., sampling tasty burritos from Freebirds and grooving to sounds of DJ Dave Wrangler were uninhibited guests who went so far as to done animal noses and snouts for party pix.

In the mix were Gloria Luna, Jared Lang, Liz Gorman and Stephen Jones, Michael Mandola, Andrea Pro, Jesse Bounds, Katherine Orellana, Jennifer LeGrand and Brent Howard, Adam Gibson, Sanford Steinberg, Vernon Caldera, Payman Khania and Farrah Akhtar.

To My Fellow Mayors and Council Members:

In Plano, Texas we have recently welcomed our first Freeb!rds restaurant into our city. Already their business is booming, and with each meal at Freeb!rds you get great food, accompanied by a huge serving of fun and enthusiasm.

But with Freeb!rds, you also get something that is not common in corporate America. You get a significant commitment from the entire organization to being a part of the “serving others” culture in each community.

Their civic involvement is legendary, and they have already demonstrated this by their generous support of the North Texas Food Bank (feeding the hungry) in our region. In addition they have given support to our local group, Plano Fire Rescue Associates, which is a very active local organization that supports our Plano Fire Department by promoting education and awareness of fire safety in our city.

I have no doubt that I will have many more terrific stories of Freeb!rds’ involvement in our community. They are a great example of corporate citizenship at its best. I encourage you to welcome Freeb!rds into your city. They really do “walk the talk”.

Annette,

Here are some photos I just received from Africa! There will be more to come so these are just the beginning. The care package was so much more successful than I had hoped for. The smiles are genuine. A new shirt (and American at that) is more than they could ever hope for in that area. They currently are living in 110 degree weather with no electricity. Fresh water is a challenge as well for them. The group in the photos are volunteers in that area who are making a difference for their local tribe/community. We are expecting thank you letters soon in their native language (which will be interpreted). This will be the start of our pen pal relationship as we will motivate each community (Lubbock Texas USA and Goz Beida Chad, Africa) to be active in World Works and to pay it forward. A funny story; they didn’t understand the koozies at first. The local group leader (my contact – Tracy Stover) did know but didn’t tell them. She enjoyed their pleasure in figuring it out on their own. At first; mittens, then pen holder, followed by walkie talkie holder then finally a can holder! They are actually now using them as their walkie talkie holders as they fit perfectly and are great at protecting them as well. If you look closely at the pictures you can see them in use. They loved the stickers as well and are putting them on everything! I will keep you posted as more photos and stories come in. I will be laminating the pictures and letters and sharing them with our community here at Central Park as we motivate our guests and us as well to be active in our World Works vision!

When you find yourself gazing up at the Statue of Liberty, who is astride an airborne motorcycle crashing through a brick wall while brandishing a burrito the size of a large Thermos and flanked by winged accordions, you have found the funk. You have found Freebirds, my friends.

Originally a Santa Barbara, Calif., creation, Freebirds World Burrito was created by two college roommates. One of the roommates bought out the other and created a separate company in College Station, Texas. Since then, Freebirds have popped up in Austin, Houston, Dallas, Lubbock and San Marcos.

However, the Freebirds location on Huebner Road retains as much charm and independent spirit as the College Station original. Classic rock music blares from speakers and the walls are covered in a mural of clouds – some of which form obscure objects such as a pterodactyl or a (now ubiquitous) accordion with wings.

The flying accordions, fleets of which dangle from the ceiling, are a nod to the influence of Tejano and Conjunto in San Antonio rock, and newspapers are tacked to a wall and a burrito bar. According to Huebner location manager Pat Smiley, the burrito bar at the College Station location is so long employees have to tack up two copies of the Houston Chronicle and two of the Texas A&M University paper, The Eagle. Lyrics from local band the Texas Tornadoes cover one wall and a memorial to a passed employee is nestled in another corner.

Figurines sculpted by guests out of tin-foil leftover from their burritos line the walls and hang from ceilings. Some are as simple as figures while some are Star Wars fighter ship and popular video game Legend of Zelda replicas.

“We tried to be a little different than everyone else and it worked for us,” Smiley said. “Kids are exposed to us in college and they grow up with us, bring their kids and families here. A lot of restaurants would think the foil sculptures are junk, but we love it.”

While the atmosphere at Firebirds is laid back and carefree, there's a deeper message in the burritos. The restaurant prides itself on fostering freedom and independence, preferring customers customize burritos to their liking. Local artists and music are celebrated and students can be seen camping out at tables with their laptops after lunch.

“We try to offer something pretty fresh and customizable,” Smiley said. “When I have newbies come in, I describe it as the Subway of burritos. You're making it up. I'm just helping you put it together.”

To order, customers pick the size of their burrito and then the fillings: rice, beans, steak or chicken, vegetables, cheese and extras such as guacamole, sour cream, salsa and more. All food is cooked fresh and their beans, both black and refried, are cooked without lard. Hungry patrons often choose the Monster or Super Monster, which are measured in pounds, not ounces.

But Freebirds isn't just “guy food,” as Smiley states. Freebirds also offers chicken enchilada soup, salads, quesadillas and taco meals. Smiley, who has worked at all the College Station locations and several Austin locations, says he has never seen someone who doesn't like Freebirds. He says people bring their relatives from out of town in and their families up to try the burritos. According to Smiley, his most memorable moment was when a soldier from Iraq literally climbed off the plane and had his wife drive him to Freebirds for a Monster.

“Guys love us. Girls love us,” Smiley said. “Parents love us. Kids love us. Everybody comes here. For me, it's really the idea of good friends and good times. It's like I get to invite people to my house and have them sample my feed. I've seen people from College Station (when I worked there) I've seen kids grow up. It's great to be invited to snapshots of people's lives, as cheesy as that sounds. It's cool.”

Recently, Freebirds World Burrito opened up a new location on Highway 151 by Sea World and Westover Hills. Burrito “fanatics” kicked off the grand opening by holding an event supporting Penny's From Heaven and Fisher House, the charities Freebirds supports.

“We chose this spot because we feel this area is a developing area,” said Annette Beavers, Freebirds World Works director. “We like the idea of being near Lackland Air Force Base. We think San Antonio will become a great destination area, even more so than now. We're building three more locations in 2010.”

Freebirds lovers shouldn't fear – they can get their beloved Supermonsters at any location, though the comparatively minute Freebird is still the most popular burrito requested.

“All are Freebirds locations are the same – hippie inspired restaurants,” Beavers said. “We serve fresh food every day, and all our employees are enthusiastic. We expect this one to be a success as well. This new location not only provided new jobs for locals; it's providing support for people in this area who work with military and families. We're proud to assist them in our efforts”

Patients range from 10-18yrs old and they are very grateful for your kindness.

THE CLOCK SAYS 7AM

For awhile now I have been hearing the FREEB!RDS crew arrives super early to make everything from scratch. Scratch, this is a restaurant on speed (at least it is during lunch on any given day) moving a mile a minute. How do they keep it fresh? No, seriously.

Well let's just say that on my recent visit to Shepherd Plaza in Houston, I got a sneak peak behind the scenes. Yep, at 7am. Not only was the rice cooking but the chips were being fried, dipped and swirled (all homemade mind you) and the Roasted Tomatillo dressing was being whipped up for the days use. Man, was I impressed! I've never seen a place like this with such a dedicated crew. Who knew it took so much hard work, dedication and committed bunch of folks to make FREEB!RDS what it is today. Again, super impressed. I have such a better appreciation of what I'm eatingh......I mean all those chips will taste that much better as I wolf them down with my all-time favortire queso. Yum!

Keep up the great work you guys.....I'm thinking this is way too cool to be "not normal!"

We're hosting a food & clothing drive for St. Vincent de Paul food pantry & store. The drive is going to last through the weekend. (Friday-Sunday) and the reason for the drive is that there is a food pantry located on Congress/Oltorf that provides food and clothing to over 500 families in our neighborhood. They have fed close to 5900 Austinites since October, and now their pantries are empty. They are in desperate need of our help, so join us as we help our neighbors and people in need.

Last night the UT Rugby team decided to have a contest after practice. Well, it wasn't any 'ole practice. Yep, a Super Monster eating contest. About 15 members of the team participated and the rest cheered them on. The winner was Matt Gabriel who finished his in 11min, 30seconds. Stephen Mahoney got what he called the Awesome-st Super-Monster. Not 2 but 3 Monster tortillas. It took 2 rollers to roll and you wouldn't believe it but he almost finished it.

Nice work guys. Feel free to come by after practice any time.

I bet you didn't know this but we make our beans fresh, everyday at FREEB!RDS. Yep, every morning one of crew members is in charge of sorting, rinsing, boiling and stirring the beans you eat. To the right, we stir, and stir, and stir. We're stirring these things up until the time our doors open for lunch, just in time to serve you the freshest ingredients. We woudln't think about giving you anything else; I know I wouldn't want some processed "bean-like" substance. Anyway, wanted to give a shout out today to the crew who's stirring things up!

One of our guests (who is now a Fanatic) brought this cookie cake for the crew in The Woodlands. A couple days ago, a female guest lost a diamond ring in our restaurant. It was a family heirloom and she wasn't even sure she had lost it here. We looked initially and did not find it. At closing time as they were moving everything to sweep and mop, there it was! She was overjoyed when we called her to tell her the good news, and this is what she did for us.

This is just a small testament to the caliber of people working here at the Woodlands FREEB!RDS.

How's it going? My name is Christian. I talked to you on Tuesday the 14th at the Freebird's in The Woodlands, well actually my mom kinda gave you my story but either way. So, I'm not really sure how much of the story you need, so I'll just send you the basic idea and you just get back to me with anything that's missing.

Ok, so the basic story as told by yours truly:

It was the summer of '02. I had spend the entire semester with my girlfriend in College Station, TX and became completely addicted to Monsters on cayenne with rice, refried beans, steak, jalapenos, and a splash of sour cream! We spend the summer in The Woodlands, TX and used every party opportunity in College Station to get Freebirds.

One day before moving back to College Station for the Fall Semester I broke my neck which left me paralyzed from my chest on down. After two weeks of ICU, feeding tubes, and ice chips I was moved to TIRR, a rehab hospital in the Medical Center.

I was finally allowed to eat 'food', but between the funny taste the tubes left in my mouth and the hospital cuisine, it wasn't long until I demanded a Monster! The Freebirds on Kirby was just a quick shot down the road, so I gave strict directions for my perfect Monster and sent my mom on her merry way! Well, it wasn't actually that easy. First I had a heated argument with the nurse in charge about habanero sauce, jalapenos, and cayenne tortillas. I angrily agreed to toning it down to mild...at that point I didn't care, all I wanted was my Monster!

My mom was gone for what seemed like an eternity, but I eventually heard her outside the room door talking to the nurse. What was she thinking wasting even a second out there? She just doesn't know! Well at this point it should be mentioned that having minimal motoric skills and Monsters don't necessarily mix well! I watched her unwrap the Monster and place it between my hands. The first attempt to get a bite ended with the Monster going straight for my eye (no pun intended!). After propping up some pillows and readjusting the burrito between my hands I finally got to have my bite! To describe the goodness should be not necessary, since those who've had it just know, and those who haven't had it, well, they will never understand it!

Per the el jefe on duty, as of last night they tucked in the campers for a nice evening of waiting....not to worry - they have fans, 20" tv's, X-boxes and plenty of shelter with their tents.

"We were at 25 by 6pm at which time we passed around a fax order and placed an OTF for them from our Cutten Road location. We couldn't forget to bring them burritos to enjoy. The best story was the mom who got in line a 3pm for her son who was driving in from College Station to be sure he was in the running for the top 25. There will be many more stories to share as the clock ticks." Less than 24 hours to go...

Looking good so far!

This picture was taken last Saturday at 8pm. Workers were outside on the roof and along the side of building. Marquee sign is already up and looks good. No – I can’t wait....I actually was supposed to travel that Thursday – but changed my plans to the following week.

Pat and his team volunteered as gate attendants at the Texas Folklife Festival, which benefits the UT Institute of Texan Cultures scholarships programs and also benefits various heritage, ethnic and cultural organizations in the area. We all braved the 100 degree heat and had a great time greeting and interacting with the guests, and even got a chance to tell the FREEB!RDS Story to curious guests. We also got a few “gig ems,” “hook 'em Horns” and even a “Hell Yeah- FREEB!RDS” in response to our t-shirts we wore. Good times were had by all; now looking for that next great World Works event.

A tasty weekend of food, music and family fun, this three-day festival features over 50 Addison restaurants serving generous samplings of their food at reduced prices. Festivities include national musical entertainment, celebrity chef demonstrations, carnival rides, midway games, arts and crafts, wine tasting and seminars, children's entertainment and more. Tickets are $5 for ages 4 and older prior to 5:00pm and $10 after 5:00pm.

Local artists find advice, friendship through Lubbock Sketch Club

The Lubbock Sketch Club meets every Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. to bring together a variety of artists to share and learn from each other.

Artists of every age and experience level meet at Freebird's near Slide Road and Loop 289, said Will Terrell, a Lubbock artist who create the club.

As many as 70 local artists have attended the weekly meeting, he said, but about 40 to 50 artists usually attend.

Sarah Vaughn, a freshman studio art major from Lubbock, said the Sketch Club has enabled her to feature multiple pieces of abstract art during First Friday Art Trail in the Depot District and has given her direction in publishing the graphic novel she is creating.

"It is nice to associate with other artists," Vaughn said.

Vaughn received treatment through horse therapy after being declared disabled for a period of time during her life.

Because of her healing experiences with horses, she now draws abstract versions of horses for the art shows she participates in.

Vaughn said she has been coming to Sketch Club meetings for a year a half and the members of the group have offered her advice and encouraged her artwork.

Marc Watson, an alumnus from Lubbock who will return to Tech in the fall to earn a fine arts master's degree, said the Lubbock Sketch Club has provided "an enjoyable environment" for him where connections with famous artists can be made.

He said he brings his 10-year-old brother to the weekly meetings, where artists ages 6 to 80 interact with each other.

Watson, who has created murals for Covenant Medical Center, encourages students interested in comics, art or graphics to come and enjoy Saturday meetings and not be afraid to bring examples of their work to share.

Also, the group offers opportunities to participate in the Lubbock Arts Festival, Comic Expos, classes, workshops and booths at craft fairs.

Terrell said the Lubbock Comic Book Expo will be hosted Friday through Sunday by Lubbock Sketch Club and Star Comics during the Lubbock Arts Festival at the Civic Center.

Terrell said the comics will be given out at the festival as part of National Free Comic Book Day, which takes place the first Saturday in May.

"This is huge for a comic book event in West Texas," he said.

Ariel Walden, a junior broadcast journalism major from Lubbock, said many of the friendships she has today have been gained through the Lubbock Sketch Club.

The club offers support from artists with similar interests and "talent with different styles," she said. Those who attend the meetings are friendly and give input on work.

She said people who "love art should draw a little every single day."

Terrell said he advises those interested in becoming better artists to find teachers and practice. He said the best way of learning is to "imitate things you see and ask questions."

"Most people think you have to be born talented to do work of any kind, especially with comic books," he said, "but I don't believe that's true at all. I think that it's like reading or writing or math. If society nourished it and encouraged it on a regular basis, everybody could draw and reach a certain level."

The Sketch Club caters to artists at whatever skill level they are at, he said, and if the artists enjoy drawing and are passionate about it, then they have the potential of getting to the skill level they desire.

"The Sketch Club is a way of challenging each other," Terrell said.
